Initiating a European Network to develop a European Cetacean Photo-ID System and Database

EUROPHLUKES will be a large database of photos of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) founded by a local photographer. Cetaceans are extremely difficult to study in their natural environment. Photo-identification is a technique to recognise individual animals from photographs. It is very effective for providing much of the information needed for managing cetacean populations as a part of a sustainable marine ecosystem.

EUROPHLUKES, as a large database of photo-material, with feature based retrieval, will be a valuable element in the research infrastructure for marine biology and will contribute to the understanding of the populations and movements of cetaceans. EUROPHLUKES will make it possible to answer the question if any individual cetacean has ever before been photographed in European waters, and if so, where and when.

Start
EUROPHLUKES is funded by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme, and contributing to the implementation of the Key Action 1.1.4.-9: Support for Research Infrastructure Concerted Action within the Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development thematic programme. The contract no. is EVR1-CT2001-20007. The project will run for 36 months and has a total effort of 145 personmonths.
